There are a lot of homeless dogs out there that need to be saved. Some of them try to run away when they are being rescued, probably because they don’t know yet that it’s for their own good. Others don’t put up a fight; they easily go with their rescuers as if they had been waiting to be taken off the streets.
The dog in our story, Maya, was one of those who seemed happy to be rescued. Staff from Howl of a Dog, a dog rescue organization, saw her by chance one summer day in a parking lot.
Many homeless dogs end up in parking lots because these are frequented by people, who often give food to the dogs. Stray dogs know they have a chance of getting fed in such places that’s why they stay there.
The parking lot where Maya was found was located by the side of a busy road far from the city. Maya was by herself, taking refuge under the shadow of a tree because it was very hot that day. When the rescuers approached her, they noticed how thirsty she was.
They also saw how friendly she was. She didn’t run away when they came near. Instead, she lay on the ground and allowed them to pet her. In no time, she was already in the car and enjoying a ride to the rescue center.
She seemed to instinctively know that the people who approached her came to help her. She looked like she had been waiting for someone like them to save her.
The rescuers helped Maya with her needs. They also house-trained her and taught her to socialize with other dogs.
Maya, who was about two years old when she was rescued, discovered a lot of things she had never known before. For the first time in her life, she learned how to play with toys. She also learned how to play with humans and other dogs.
The big day finally came for Maya: she got adopted by a family from Boston. It was a dream come true for her. This dog, who was waiting for people to find her, now enjoys the loving embrace of a forever family.
